The world we live in
today is fast becoming a youth dominated
society. Looking old makes you feel old and
can affect your performance at work or in
your social activities as it becomes
increasingly more difficult to compete with
youthful colleagues.
A face lift can remove these signs of aging
and rejuvenate the recipient to the point
where often the whole behaviour and
lifestyle of the patient alters. Compliments
such as "You look ten years younger" and
"I've never seen you looking so well" can
give a face lift patient a great boost of
confidence and often change attitudes
towards career prospects, social activities
and even the type of clothes and hairstyle
chosen.
Obviously, we cannot promise a patient that
a face lift will change their life,
all that we can do is remove the signs of
aging and hope this will have
the desired result. Often it does, but any
improvement other than the
visual is very much dependant on the
patient.
The objective of a face lift is to remove
the signs of aging which
show themselves in the form of loose skin,
lines and wrinkles in
various parts of the face, and can make the
recipients look much
older and more tired than they are or feel.
The wrinkling is due to a gradual shrinking
of the underlying
material combined with a general lack of
elasticity of the skin
which will not contract at the same rate and
hangs in folds in
the lower part of the face and neck. The
skin fibres tend to
break at these folds forming wrinkles and
lines.
A face lift will tighten the skin on the
cheeks, the side of the
face and jaw line and also the upper neck.
Basically the technique used involves a
gradual stretching
of the skin, on the sides of the face and
jaw line,
backward towards the ear, and the removal of
excess
skin through an incision that will follow
the contour
immediately in front of the ear and tuck up
behind
the ear out of sight.
